Frankenthaler Climate Initiative Awards $100,000 Grant to SMHF

We are honored to announce that the Steven Myron Holl Foundation has been selected as a 2026 Frankenthaler Climate Initiative Implementation Grant awardee, receiving $100,000 to advance our commitment to sustainable architecture and climate action.

Established by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in collaboration with Environment & Culture Partners, the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative is the largest private national grantmaking program supporting climate action in the visual arts.

The grant supports a major step toward a net-zero future for the ‘T’ Space campus: replacing the oil-fired furnace at the ‘T’ Space Commons with a 3-ton ground-source heat pump and 500-foot vertical closed-loop geothermal well. The new system is expected to reduce heating-related greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 80 percent annually.

The project advances our mission to demonstrate that architecture can be both architecturally ambitious and ecologically responsible, while further establishing the ‘T’ Space campus as a living laboratory for sustainable design in the Hudson Valley.

As the project nears completion, we invite the public to visit the ‘T’ Space Reserve and experience firsthand how architecture, art, and ecology can come together—and how sustainable design can be put into practice.
