Moving to the U.S. marked a turning point in both my artistic and personal life. There I encountered jazz, free improvisation, and a culture that encouraged individual artistic expression. These experiences complemented my upbringing in Korea, where tradition, continuity, and collective values have shaped my musical foundation. Through this journey, I learned to improvise for the first time and to imagine the gayageum beyond its traditional contexts. The Song of Swords reflects this process of discovery—a journey through which I began to find my own artistic voice.

Biography

DoYeon Kim is a forward-thinking gayageum performer, composer, and improvisor forging a distinctive contemporary musical vision. Listening to her improvisational music and band performances, it becomes clear that she has the ability to express the sounds she hears—the musical language she has absorbed throughout her life—in her own unique voice. She is an artist with the ability to articulate these sounds with clarity, and can confidently be regarded as an innovative artist.
