John Yau

2025 Season


John Yau is the recipient of the 13th Annual ‘T’ Space Annual Poetry Award.

He will read poetry at the June opening event as part of the 2025 Synthesis of the Arts Season.

Biography

John Yau is a poet who has been publishing reviews and essays on art and literature since 1978. The 2017 recipient of the Jackson Prize in Poetry, his recent books of poetry include Tell It Slant (2023) and Genghis Chan on Drums (2021). His Diary of Small Discontents: New and Selected Poems, 1974-2025will be published in the fall of 2025.  Une autre façcon d’écrire sur le sable, Selected Poems, has been published in French, edited and translated by Marc Chenetier. He received a 2019 Rabkin Poetry Prize for art criticism. In 2024, he received an American Book Award for Please Wait by the Coatroom: Reconsidering Race and Identity in American Art. He has written monographs on John Pai, March Avery, Liu Xiaodong, Thomas Nozkowski, Catherine Murphy, Richard Artschwager: Into the Desert, A Thing Among Things: The Art of Jasper Johns, and Joan Mitchell: Works on Paper 1956–1992. Since 2012, his weekly reviews have appeared in the online magazine, Hyperallergic Weekend. He is Professor Emeritus at Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers University), and lives in Beacon, NY.
