Marty Ehrlich is celebrated as one of the most versatile and creative artists of his generation. He has performed his music with his Trio Exaltation, Traveler’s Tales, Dark Woods, and Cartographies of Flight ensembles throughout America and Europe. He has recorded 30 releases since 1980 of his ensembles on the Sunny Side, Enja, New World, Palmetto, and Tzadik labels. His full discography as an ensemble leader and composer ranges from duos and trios to full Jazz Orchestra.
He appears on over 100 recordings with artists such as Andrew Hill, Julius Hemphill, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, John Carter, Bobby Previte, Don Grolnick, George Russell,, Myra Melford, Mark Dresser, Anthony Davis, and many more.
As a multi-instrumentalist passionate about interpretation and improvisation, Ehrlich has appeared with classical ensembles as diverse as the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony. He has been a mainstay of generations of the New Jazz, being part of hundreds of world premieres.
Ehrlich is the chief curator of the Julius Hemphill Arcive at NYU, and has edited the complete compositions of Julius Hemphill for Subito Music. He continues to perform Hemphill’s music for a range of ensemble settings. In the last two years he has led the Air Legacy Trio, continuing performances of music by Henry Threadgill and the Air ensemble.
Ehrlich began performing with the Human Arts Ensemble in St. Louis MO in his teens, and then attended the New England Conservatory in Boston, studying with George Russell, Jaki Byard, and Gunther Schuller. He has been centered in New York City since 1978. Amongst his numerous honors is a Guggenheim Foundation Composition Fellowship.
